IMAGE LOCATION: Atacama Desert, Chile.

The salt flats of the Atacama create an ideal environment for reflections, being so high up, there is usually very little cloud cover, coupled with with very clear still air, helps creates a mirror like setting. With this image I wanted to highlight the reflection of the closest flamingo set against its background, so used a wide aperture, creating a narrow focal area.

What makes a flamingo pink? The colour comes specifically from the red carotenoid pigments, such as canthaxanthin, which they metabolise and deposit in the feathers, facial skin, and elsewhere. These pigments are widely distributed in many of the flamingos’ prey items, including algae and diatoms, not just brine shrimp.
