A male white rhino wonders towards a watering hole. This large male was formidable in size and stature even to use in our 4x4, after surveying us for a short while, he moved on to get a refreshing drink.

White rhinos have two horns; rhino horns grow as much as three inches a year, and have been known to grow up to five feet long. While females use their horns to protect their young, males use them to fight attackers.

The horns for which rhinos are so well known has been their downfall; many animals have been killed by poachers exclusively for this hard, hair-like growth. It is falsely celebrated for containing magical medicinal properties in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, while in parts of North Africa and the Middle East, the horn is also valued as an ornamental dagger handle.
