It hardly let its trunk out of its mouth, almost like it was sucking its thumb. An elephant is of course, its trunk. Integral to life in the savannah, a trunk is a long nose for trumpeting, smelling, breathing, drinking, and also for grabbing things, especially a potential meal. It shouldn’t be a surprise therefore that elephant trunks are incredibly strong; the trunk alone contains about 40,000 muscles.

While this little elephant may not yet be capable of doing what its parents do. African elephants are a keystone species, which means they adopt an integral role in their ecosystem. During the dry season, they use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds and create watering holes many animals can drink from. Moreover, their dung is full of seeds, helping plants to spread and grow. As they pass through forests, they feast on trees and shrubs, creating thorough through routes for smaller animals. Meanwhile in the grasslands, they uproot trees and eat saplings, which helps keep the landscape open for migratory species like zebras, wildebeest and other plains animals allowing them to thrive.
